Auroch: From forgotten worlds
29/11/12 || Smalley
“From forgotten worlds” is the first full-length from Vancouver Black & Decker-s (read: blackened death-ers) Auroch, who, according to Metallum, were formerly trashers (okay, enough with the stupid puns now). Not that many metalheads will ever know what they sounded like before this, since everything else from them were just demos ‘n splits, nor will they probably know what Auroch sounds like now either, since “worlds” isn’t that good on its own terms. You see, the most obvious influence here is good ol’ Morbido Angelo, especially the wild energy of the “Altars of madness” era (but there are some touches from other records as well), but, the prob there is that there are so many other underground, stubbed bands that have already tried to sound like Angel (and failed to be good), that the choice to emulate MA almost feels… lazy, by this point.
And that’s before even taking into account how, even if this record as-is felt original, the songwriting would still be disorganized and uninteresting, again, just like so many other stubbed bands, especially the death metal ones. And, the stuff here that doesn’t resemble MA still isn’t better at all than the rest of the material. There are a few decent-ish moments here, their basic production is acceptable enough, and they don’t fuck up anything too badly at all here, but nor do they excel at all here. No real surprises there.
6/10: You’ve managed to leave Suckville Alabama, USA; congrats, I guess.
After going thru that crap, you most likely wanna read something way more interesting. You do, admit it.
